Online EWP Training Course (Elevating Work Platform)

Australia and New Zealand

EWP training is the short online course an organisation assigns so its people understand what an elevating work platform can do to them, what the machine needs before it moves, and which lifts carry a licence. It sits beside the working at heights training course, which covers the edge and the harness, while this one covers the machine. Australian WHS law puts a licence on one kind of lift and leaves the rest to the organisation to make its people competent on. Sentrient is not a registered training organisation, and your organisation stays responsible for who it lets operate.

Elevating work platform licensing facts for Australian workplaces

Eleven Metres Decides Who Needs A Licence

  • A high risk work licence is needed to operate a boom-type EWP where the boom is 11 metres or more. Below that length, and for scissor lifts and vertical mast lifts at any height, no licence applies (Safe Work Australia, Elevating work platforms).
  • A high risk work licence runs for 5 years and nobody may do the work on an expired one, so the expiry belongs in your records rather than the operator’s wallet.
  • Boom length is the longer of two measurements, the vertical height to the floor with the platform fully extended or the horizontal reach from the centre of rotation, which is not the working height printed on the machine (SafeWork NSW, High risk work licences).
What the EWP training course covers for operators and crews

What EWP Training Covers, And What A Licence Does Not

The course teaches the decisions made in the minutes before a platform moves. Reading the manufacturer’s plate for the rated capacity, checking the ground and the gradient, looking up for conductors and structure, setting an exclusion zone for the things that fall out of a basket, and knowing that the way most people are hurt on an EWP is crushed between the basket and something fixed rather than falling out of it.

A licence answers one question about one machine. It says a named person may operate a boom over 11 metres. It says nothing about the scissor lift in the warehouse aisle, nothing about the apprentice holding the zone below, and nothing about whether anyone checked the machine this morning. Most organisations own more of the unlicensed machines than the licensed ones, and that is the gap this course is built for.

The duty behind it is plain. An organisation must see the licence or written evidence before it lets anyone do licensed work, and for every other platform it must still make sure the operators know how to use them safely. Training supports both of those. Neither one is settled by it.

Who the EWP course online suits across an organisation

Who The EWP Course Online Is Written For

Operators of scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts and booms under 11 metres, the licensed operators who want the duty refreshed rather than the licence renewed, and the people underneath who hold an exclusion zone or hand tools up. Maintenance teams, warehouse and facilities staff, trades and store crews all take it. Supervisors who sign off machine work pair it with Sentrient’s work health and safety training course for managers and supervisors, and the rest of the compliance course library covers the hazards around them.

EWP online course outline from pre-start to shutdown

The EWP Online Course From Pre-Start To Shutdown

The EWP online course runs in short modules that follow a shift:

  • The machine families, and which of them carries a licence
  • Reading the plate: rated capacity, platform load and what counts toward it
  • The pre-start check, and the fault that sends the machine back to the yard
  • Ground, gradient, penetrations and the soft edge nobody surveyed
  • Overhead conductors, structures and the approach distances
  • Crushing and entrapment between the basket and something fixed
  • Exclusion zones, dropped objects and the people working below
  • Emergency lowering, who operates the ground controls, and the record that follows
How long the EWP training online takes to complete

Fifteen To Thirty Minutes Of EWP Training Online

Fifteen to thirty minutes for most learners. The course holds a learner’s place, so a fitter pulled off mid-module restarts at the next break, and it runs on a phone in the yard as readily as a desktop in the office.

The learner experience inside the elevating work platform course

What A Learner Does Before The Platform Moves

Learners work through a pre-start on a real machine plate, decide whether a lift needs a licensed operator, and set an exclusion zone around a basket working over a walkway. Each decision gets a consequence rather than a score, because the point is the habit and not the mark. Completions, dates and attempts sit in the learning management system against each name, so you can see who finished and who is still outstanding.

Learning outcomes from the EWP course for your crew

What Your Crew Can Do After The EWP Course

By the end of the EWP course a learner can:

  • Name which machines on their site carry a licence and which do not
  • Read a machine plate and work out whether a load fits
  • Run a pre-start check and quarantine a machine that fails it
  • Judge ground, gradient and overhead conductors before the platform moves
  • Set an exclusion zone that accounts for dropped objects
  • Reach the ground controls and start an emergency lowering
Elevating work platform records and the verification trail

The Verification Trail Your Organisation Can Produce

Asked who was cleared to operate the lift on a given morning, an organisation should be able to answer from a record rather than a memory. Completions sit against each person, licence expiries sit beside them instead of in a drawer, and the whole picture reads as one report across every site and every machine family.

What changes is the order of the conversation. A supervisor checks the record before the work is allocated rather than after an inspector asks, a hire company delivering a boom on Monday meets a crew that has already covered it, and a new starter is cleared on the scissor lift in their first week instead of their first month. That turns the verification duty into something you can show rather than something you believe, which is what our customers were after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about ewp training.

An organisation assigns this short online course so the people near its lifts understand the machine and their own part around it, and every completion is dated against a name. It suits operators of unlicensed machines, licensed operators who want the duty refreshed, and the crews working beneath a raised platform.

Yes. The elevating work platform training rests on Australian WHS law and names the state regulators rather than generalising, and the content is kept current with the legislation in every state and territory. New Zealand organisations run it unchanged, because the machine behaves the same either side of the Tasman.

Most organisations buy the licence and stop there. The boom operators are sent to a provider, the card is filed, and the scissor lift crews get a verbal handover from whoever used it last. Our writing on WHS asset management compliance and asset management compliance covers where that leaves a business. This course fills the layer underneath.

No. Sentrient is not an RTO, this is not nationally recognised and it authorises nobody to operate. RIIHAN301E, Operate elevating work platform, is the unit providers deliver, and the Yellow Card is an industry credential. Both come from elsewhere. This course builds the awareness around them.

A high risk work licence for a boom-type EWP where the boom is 11 metres or more, and the organisation must see that licence or written evidence before it lets the work start. For every other platform it must still make sure operators know how to use them safely (Safe Work Australia, Elevating work platforms). Your organisation remains responsible for both.

No. A scissor lift is not boom-type, so no high risk work licence applies at any height, and the same goes for a vertical mast lift. What does apply is the duty to make the operator competent and to keep evidence of it. That duty sits with your organisation, not with a licensing authority.

The Yellow Card is an industry credential from the Elevating Work Platform Association, delivered by its accredited trainers across six machine modules (EWPA, Yellow Card). A hire company induction covers its own machine. Neither is a whole-workforce course with a completion record you can report on, which is what this is.

Fifteen to thirty minutes, and the EWP training online keeps a learner’s place between sittings. Crews commonly run it on an induction morning before anyone touches a machine, which is the point at which it can still change what happens next. No classroom and no travel.

A high risk work licence runs for 5 years and nobody may do that work on an expired one, as the state regulators set out. Renewing it is a matter for a registered training organisation. The awareness layer we provide is yours to repeat, and most organisations set it annually or when somebody changes site.

Sentrient course content is legally endorsed and written against Australian WHS law and the regulators’ own published guidance, which is named and linked on this page. It is awareness content and not legal advice, so your organisation stays responsible for its own procedures and for who it authorises to operate.

Content is kept up to date with the legislation for all states and territories in Australia, and New Zealand. When a regulator changes guidance on plant or licensing, the affected screens are revised and the version a learner saw is stamped against their completion, so your records show what was taught and when.

It is the longer of two measurements, the vertical height to the floor with the platform fully extended or the horizontal reach from the centre of rotation to the outer edge of the platform. It is not the working height on the spec sheet, which is why machines get hired and operated on the wrong assumption.

Yes. Keep it in Sentrient, serve the EWP online course from the platform your people already open through our learning management system, or let your HRIS launch it the day somebody starts or moves to a site with machines. One completion record whichever way it runs.

Assign by site, team or role, set a due date, and reminders go out on their own. Overdue learners show on one list with their supervisor named, so the follow-up is a conversation rather than a spreadsheet exercise. Bulk assignment covers a whole depot at once.

Who completed it, on what date, from which device, and which version of the content was in front of them. After an incident the first request is what that worker had been told and when. A dated report answers it in seconds, and it sits beside the licence expiries you already track.

The course teaches people and the asset management software runs the plant side, holding the machines, the service dates and the inspection history. Training tells you the operator was taught. The asset record tells you the machine was fit. An organisation needs both and they answer different questions.

The working at heights training course for the edge and the harness. The contractor safety training course for the crews who arrive with their own machine. The confined space awareness training course where a platform is used to reach one.

Yes. The EWP course online runs in a browser on a phone or tablet, needs no app and no booking, and it reopens where the learner stopped. Night shift and weekend crews complete it in their own time windows, which is usually the only way a depot gets everybody through the same content.

It does. Assign the same course everywhere, and the reporting rolls up to one view across every location while each supervisor sees only their own team. Where a state regulator words a licensing rule differently, the course points learners at their own regulator rather than flattening the difference.

Completion data stays on Australian infrastructure and is handled under the Australian Privacy Principles (OAIC, Australian Privacy Principles). Access is scoped by team, so a supervisor opens their own crew and nothing wider. Nobody’s details are sold or rented, and your organisation stays the one accountable for its people’s data.

Because an EWP refresher course here is not a seat sold one at a time. It sits in a workplace compliance courses library an organisation runs across its whole workforce, with assignment, reminders and one report, rather than a booking you repeat per person per year.

Any organisation whose people go up: manufacturers, schools and facilities teams, councils, warehouses and property maintenance crews. Pental Limited automated its compliance processes with Sentrient, and Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School and Carinya Society run the library the same way.

We price per user and quote against your own numbers, because the figure moves with headcount and with which courses you want beside this one. Raise it on the demo and we will put a real number in front of you rather than a list price.

Yes. Ask for a free 20-minute demo of the EWP course and we will walk the modules, show the reporting and follow one completion into a single person’s record. Bring whoever signs off machine work on your sites and let them test it.
