What is workplace compliance training?

Australia and New Zealand

Workplace compliance training is short, structured learning that helps employees, contractors and volunteers understand their legal and behavioural obligations at work, and what to do when something goes wrong. It usually covers areas such as work health and safety, privacy, bullying, sexual harassment, equal employment opportunity and the appropriate use of the internet and social media.

In Australia, some training is effectively mandatory. Employers have a positive duty under the Respect at Work reforms and a primary duty of care under work health and safety law to take reasonable steps to prevent harm. Delivering regular, documented training to new starters and existing staff is one of the clearest ways to meet that duty and to show you have done so.

Why is workplace compliance training important?

Workplace compliance is becoming increasingly complex, especially around the physical and psychological safety of workers. National research by the Australian Human Rights Commission has found that bullying, harassment and discrimination remain serious problems in Australian workplaces.

Yet many organisations still have no reliable, repeatable way to train their people and record that they have done so. The costs include absenteeism, staff turnover, lost productivity, disengagement, and poor mental health. The absence of appropriate training also carries legal risk: failing to train new starters and existing staff can lead to significant claims, investigations and reputational damage.

Compliance training has a reputation for being long, dull and quickly forgotten, which is why completion rates suffer. Sentrient courses are short and written in plain English, so the message lands and the training gets done. Used alongside your workplace policies, they help you take reasonable steps towards a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace.

Sentrient’s legally endorsed eLearning courses are used by HR practitioners and senior executives across hundreds of organisations in Australia and New Zealand. They suit organisations of every size and sector, including healthcare and aged care, NDIS and disability services, education, professional services, financial services, retail, manufacturing, not-for-profits and government, and every role from frontline staff to executives and boards.

Every Sentrient course is legally endorsed and kept up to date with current legislation across all Australian states and territories, as well as in New Zealand. Each course takes about 15-20 minutes and is suitable for employees, contractors, and volunteers across any industry.
