Employee Onboarding Process In HR
The employee onboarding process in HR is usually documented as one workflow with one owner. In practice it splits, and the split is where new starters fall through.
HR owns the contract, statements and forms, right to work evidence, clearances, policy acknowledgement, payroll setup and the training assignment. Auditable, and largely done before day one.
The manager owns role clarity, the first tasks, introductions, the site induction, early feedback and whether the person feels useful in week two. None of it is auditable and all of it decides retention.
Neither owns the join. A new starter with perfect paperwork and no idea what they are meant to do this week is a failed onboarding, and the HR report will show it as complete.
Fixing it is usually a single addition. A manager checklist inside the same system, with dates, so the second half is visible.
