Laptops, phones, monitors, access cards, keys, tools and vehicles are issued informally over years, often by different managers, and recorded in nothing more reliable than an email. On the last day nobody is certain what that person holds.

Two things follow. Equipment is written off quietly because no one can prove it was issued. And a device holding company data walks out with an active login, which turns an administrative problem into a security one.

The control is not complicated. Record every asset against a person at the point of issue, tie the return list to the offboarding checklist, and reconcile it before final pay is processed.
