Importance Of Psychological Safety At Work
The importance of psychological safety at work is usually argued from the organisation’s side. Seen from the individual’s side it looks different, and arguably more concrete.
Working without it is cognitively expensive. Deciding whether to say something, rehearsing how it will land, and reading the room afterwards all consume attention that is not going into the work. Over time that sustained vigilance is the mechanism behind a good deal of work-related stress.
It also shapes a career. People who can ask questions learn faster. People who can admit a mistake get help earlier. People who can disagree get noticed for judgement rather than compliance. The person who stays quiet for two years is not just less visible, they are genuinely less developed.
And it decides whether someone stays. People rarely leave the work itself. They leave the accumulated experience of not being able to say anything about it.
Safe Work Australia covers the duty to manage psychosocial hazards. This is general information rather than legal advice.
