Reducing Manual Handling Risks
Reducing manual handling risks is most reliable when the change is built into the task, because engineering controls keep working when people are tired, rushed or new.
The changes that do most, in rough order of effect.
Change the height. Bring the work to between knee and shoulder. Raised platforms, adjustable benches and pallet lifters remove more risk than any technique.
Change the load. Smaller units, better grips, split deliveries.
Change the distance. Move storage closer to the point of use, and remove the carry.
Change the frequency. Rotate tasks so no one person does the same movement all shift.
Training and technique sit below all four of these in the hierarchy, and are the least effective of any control when used on their own.
