Sexual Harassment At Work
Sexual harassment at work is not confined to the building or to working hours. The test is whether the conduct is connected to employment, and that reaches further than most people expect.
- Work functions. Christmas parties, farewells and team drinks are work, including where alcohol is involved and attendance is optional.
- Travel and accommodation. Conferences, site visits and shared accommodation are connected to employment.
- Digital channels. Messaging apps, group chats and social media, including outside hours and on personal devices.
- Third parties. Clients, patients, contractors and members of the public, both as the person harassed and as the person harassing.
Employers who scope their policy and training to the office leave the highest-risk settings uncovered, and work functions involving alcohol are consistently among the worst of them. The Australian Human Rights Commission explains the duty. This is general information rather than legal advice.
