What are HR policies? Written statements of how an organisation will handle employment matters, from leave and conduct to grievances and performance.
The point most organisations miss is what publishing one does. A policy is not only a rule for staff. It creates a standard the organisation can be measured against, and departing from your own published process is difficult to defend afterwards.
That is why specific wording carries risk. A stated timeframe for responding to a complaint. A number of warnings before dismissal. A promise of confidentiality. A named role that no longer exists. Each becomes something you have committed to.
Generic principles rarely cause trouble. Borrowed specifics do, particularly from templates written for another organisation.
Read a draft policy as a list of commitments rather than as guidance, and the risky clauses become obvious.
