What Are HR Practices
What are HR practices when grouped by what they actually do, rather than listed by department?
Getting people in. Attraction, selection, screening, offers, onboarding and induction into the work.
Developing them. Training, capability building, feedback, coaching and progression.
Rewarding and retaining. Pay structure, recognition, flexibility, leave, benefits and wellbeing.
Managing and exiting. Performance, conduct, complaints and grievances, restructure, redundancy and offboarding.
The cluster that carries the most risk is the last one, and it is usually the least designed. Most organisations have thought carefully about hiring and barely at all about how a difficult exit is handled.
Consistency across teams matters considerably more than sophistication within any single practice, because staff compare what happened to them with what happened to somebody else.
The Fair Work Ombudsman covers termination and record obligations. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
