Why Is Psychological Safety Important
Why is psychological safety important? The answer is clearest when you look at what stops working without it. The cost is not discomfort. It is information that never reaches the person who needed it.
Without it, near misses go unreported, so the same hazard stays in place until it causes real harm. Errors get quietly corrected rather than examined, so nobody learns why they happened. Concerns about a project surface at the point of failure rather than at the point they were first noticed. Bullying and harassment go unreported because the reporter expects to carry the cost. And in meetings, the quiet agreement in the room is not consensus, it is calculation.
Every one of those is also a work health and safety problem. Poor support, low control and unreasonable demands are recognised psychosocial hazards, and a workplace where people cannot raise them is a workplace where they cannot be controlled.
Safe Work Australia sets out the duty to manage psychosocial hazards at work. This is general information rather than legal advice.
