Online Compliance Training
Online compliance training is workplace learning delivered as short, self-paced modules with a built in assessment and an automatic completion record. It suits organisations with shift workers, multiple sites or high turnover, because everyone receives the same content and the evidence is captured as people go.
What online delivery does well is coverage and proof. You can enrol 400 people in a morning, see who has not started, and produce a dated record two years later when someone asks for it. What it does poorly is nuance. A module cannot read a room, handle a disclosure, or work through a grey area with a supervisor who is unsure whether to escalate.
Regulators have noticed that gap. The Australian Human Rights Commission’s education standard under the positive duty expects education to be delivered regularly and tailored to the organisation, with senior leaders receiving sessions on their own rights and responsibilities rather than the same module issued to everyone. Treating one annual eLearning module as the entire programme is the common mistake.
Online works best as the base layer rather than the whole answer:
- Core awareness delivered online, such as respect at work training, so the whole workforce starts from the same baseline.
- A separate track for leaders, such as the sexual harassment course for supervisors and managers, covering how to receive and act on a report.
- Short WHS training videos for refreshers and toolbox sessions where a full module is more than the situation needs.
- Records management, so completion data outlives the platform it was collected in.
The Commission’s guidance on education under the positive duty sets out what regular and tailored looks like in practice. Obligations vary by state and territory and change over time, so treat this as general information rather than legal advice. See the full library of compliance training courses available online.
