Year one involves data cleansing that nobody scoped, process decisions that were previously informal, and a period where two systems run side by side. Effort goes up before it goes down.
The benefits that do arrive are worth having. One place where employee data is correct. Compliance evidence you can produce without a search. Managers self-serving information they used to request. Reporting that takes minutes rather than days. And processes that happen whether or not anyone remembers.
Setting that expectation with a board or an owner at the outset is worth doing, because a project judged purely on its year one benefits will be judged a failure.
