Building A Risk Aware Culture
Building a risk aware culture is usually approached as a programme. It is decided by a small number of moments, most of which nobody plans for.
The first time somebody escalates a problem that makes a leader look bad. The first time a project is paused because a risk was raised late. The first time an incident is investigated and the question asked is what allowed this rather than who did it.
People read those moments carefully and adjust. One badly handled escalation undoes a year of stated intent, because the story travels and the policy does not.
Practically, thank the person who raised it in front of others, separate learning from accountability so the investigation is not a search for blame, and report on how quickly issues surfaced rather than only on how many there were.
