E-Learning Assessment Tools

E-learning assessment tools are usually selected by what the platform offers rather than by what needs to be measured, and the three are not the same.

Recall. Multiple choice and true or false. Cheap, gradeable, and it tells you somebody read the screen.

Application. Scenario questions where the right answer depends on the circumstances. Harder to write and considerably more informative.

Judgement. Open responses, or a conversation with a manager. It cannot be auto-graded, which is precisely why almost nobody uses it.

Compliance training is nearly always assessed at the recall level, and then reported as though understanding had been demonstrated. For anything where a wrong decision carries a real consequence, scenario questions are well worth the extra effort of writing them.
