Effective Communication Skills For Conflict Management
The effective communication skills for conflict management are the third party’s skills, and they differ from a participant’s more than people expect.
Questioning. Open questions that separate position from interest. What someone demands and what they actually need are rarely the same thing, and the gap is where an agreement becomes possible.
Summarising. Saying each position back accurately, in neutral words, before anyone responds. This alone lowers the temperature, because most people escalate mainly to be understood.
Silence. Letting a pause run rather than filling it. The most useful sentences in these conversations usually arrive after an uncomfortable gap.
What a third party does not do is offer solutions early. It ends the conversation before the interests are on the table, and neither party owns an outcome they did not build themselves.
Safe Work Australia covers the psychosocial duty. This is general information rather than legal advice.
