Employee Onboarding Checklist
An employee onboarding checklist usually runs everything together. The desk setup sits beside the safety induction, and both get one tick.
A handful of items are not optional. Giving every new employee the Fair Work Information Statement. Giving casual employees the Casual Employment Information Statement as well. Providing work health and safety information, training, instruction and supervision appropriate to the role. Starting the employee records you are required to keep. Confirming the terms of engagement in writing.
Everything else, the welcome lunch, the buddy, the office tour, matters a good deal for retention and not at all for compliance.
Mark the required items on your checklist so that when a busy week compresses onboarding, the things that get dropped are the ones you can actually afford to drop.
The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes the required statements. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
