The examples of respect in the workplace worth putting in training are not the courtesies. Everyone already knows to say please and to listen while someone speaks.
The useful ones are structural, and they show up in ordinary decisions.
- Scheduling a meeting inside the hours your part-time staff actually work.
- Sending the agenda early enough that people who think before speaking can contribute.
- Pronouncing someone’s name correctly, and asking once rather than assigning a nickname.
- Passing on a complaint about someone to that person, rather than around them.
- Saying when a decision is already made, instead of running consultation that changes nothing.
The last one does more damage than most incivility, because it teaches people that their input is decorative. Once a team has learnt that, it stops offering anything you did not already ask for.
