First-Day Employee Onboarding Checklist
A first day employee onboarding checklist tends to be overloaded. A person absorbing a new building, new faces and a new role will retain very little of what else is put in front of them.
Three things belong on day one. The required information statements, given before or as soon as practicable after starting. A work health and safety induction covering the hazards they could actually meet that day, the emergency procedures, and who to tell if something goes wrong. And enough access and supervision to do the work safely.
Everything else can wait. Policies read properly in week one are worth more than policies signed in a pile on the morning.
Record what was covered and when. That record is the point of the exercise as much as the induction itself.
Safe Work Australia covers induction duties. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
