How Do Managers Deal With Discrimination In The Workplace
How do managers deal with discrimination in the workplace when someone raises it? The matter is largely shaped in that first conversation, before any formal process begins.
Do. Listen without interrupting. Thank them. Ask what they want to happen and what support they need. Explain the options, including going external. Say plainly what you are obliged to act on regardless of their preference. Put the next step and its timeframe in writing.
Do not. Ask why they did not raise it sooner. Offer your own view on whether it was discrimination. Promise confidentiality you cannot deliver. Suggest they try to see it from the other person’s perspective. Or move the person who complained, which is a detriment and can amount to victimisation.
The last one is the most common and the most expensive.
