How To Gain Respect At Work
Advice on how to gain respect at work usually reduces to being more visible. Speak up more, take credit, be assertive. That works less reliably than the quieter alternative.
What compounds is being predictable. Doing what you said by when you said, or telling people early when you cannot. Over a few months that produces something visibility does not, which is people routing important work to you because you are safe to rely on.
Three others carry weight out of proportion to their difficulty. Saying you do not know, which almost nobody does. Being specific rather than general in a disagreement. And crediting people publicly when the win was partly theirs.
If you have just been promoted over former peers, name the change once, directly, rather than pretending nothing happened.
