How to Report Gender Discrimination in the Workplace
The best way to report gender discrimination is usually in stages. Start internally, through the reporting channel or a manager who is not involved, and put it in writing. Set out what happened, when, who was present and what you are asking for. Keep your own copy.
If the internal route does not resolve it, or it is not safe to use, there are two external paths. The Australian Human Rights Commission handles complaints under the Sex Discrimination Act and works by conciliation first. The Fair Work Commission and the Fair Work Ombudsman deal with the general protections, which cover adverse action taken because of a protected attribute. Which one fits depends on what happened and whether you were dismissed.
Time limits matter more than most people expect. Some pathways run to months, but a general protections application involving dismissal is measured in days, so get advice early rather than after the internal process finishes. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains the general protections. This is general information rather than legal advice.
