Most Common Computer Security Threats
The most common computer security threats are found on the device in front of the person, and they are dull enough to be ignored for years.
Unpatched software. Operating systems, browsers and applications running versions with known weaknesses, because updates are deferred.
Standing administrator rights. Where every user is an administrator, anything that runs as them can install anything.
Removable media. USB devices of unknown origin, still plugged in without a second thought.
Unmanaged personal devices. Work email on a phone with no passcode and no way to wipe it remotely.
None of these needs a sophisticated attacker to exploit. Patching on a schedule, removing unnecessary administrator rights and being able to wipe a lost device cover a great deal of ground.
