Onboarding Tips
Most onboarding tips add something. Three subtractions do more, and they are free.
Stop the day one firehose. Compliance modules, systems training, policy acknowledgements and a tour, all before lunch. Almost none of it is retained, and it teaches the person that induction is something to be endured. Spread it across the first month.
Stop the all-staff introduction. Meeting forty people at once produces no relationships and considerable anxiety. Introduce five people the new starter will actually work with.
Stop the welcome pack nobody opens. A sixty-page PDF is a filing exercise. Three pages of what you need this week, and a searchable place for the rest.
Removing these makes room for the things that work, which are mostly conversations.
The Fair Work Ombudsman covers what must be given to new employees. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
