Psychological Health And Safety In The Workplace
Psychological health and safety in the workplace has a requirement that is easy to skip and hard to substitute. You have to consult workers, and for psychosocial hazards that is not a formality.
Physical hazards can often be identified by walking around. Psychosocial hazards frequently cannot. Whether role clarity is poor, whether support is available in practice, whether the workload is achievable, whether a particular client site involves regular aggression, are all things the people doing the work know and the people designing it often do not.
Useful consultation is specific. Ask about the parts of the job people dread, what makes a bad day bad, what they work around, and what they would change if they could change one thing. Generic engagement survey questions rarely surface any of it.
There is a catch worth naming. Consultation depends on people answering honestly, which brings you back to whether it is safe to do so. That is why the culture side and the duty side of this topic are not separable in practice.
Safe Work Australia sets out the consultation obligations. This is general information rather than legal advice.
