Respect For Diversity In The Workplace
Respect for diversity in the workplace is usually measured by what an organisation celebrates. The harder test is what happens when a difference is inconvenient.
A team is genuinely inclusive when a prayer break, a dietary requirement, a hearing adjustment or a carer’s finish time is absorbed as a normal operating constraint rather than treated as a favour someone has to keep asking for.
The tell is repetition. If a person has to re-explain the same requirement to each new manager, or negotiate the same adjustment every roster, the organisation has not accepted it. It has tolerated it, one conversation at a time, and the cost of that falls entirely on them.
Recording adjustments so they persist across managers and rosters is unglamorous, and it does more for people than any awareness campaign.
The Australian Human Rights Commission covers discrimination duties. This is general information rather than legal advice.
