Respect In The Workplace
Respect in the workplace is usually defined with words that sound agreeable and give nobody anything to do. It becomes more useful defined as behaviours that cost something.
- Being interrupted less than you interrupt. Track it in one meeting and the pattern is rarely evenly spread.
- Crediting the person whose idea it was, including when they are not in the room.
- Taking a correction from someone junior without making them pay for it socially afterwards.
- Answering the question that was asked, rather than the one you would prefer to answer.
Each of those costs something to the more senior person in the room, which is exactly why they work as a test. Politeness is free, everybody can perform it, and it tells you very little about how a team actually operates.
Safe Work Australia covers this under psychosocial hazards. This is general information rather than legal advice.
