The role of AI and machine learning in compliance management is real in a handful of places and overstated almost everywhere else.
It works where volume is high and judgement is low. Sorting and routing incoming reports. Drafting a first version of a policy summary that a person then corrects. Extracting obligations from a long document so somebody can check them. Spotting a pattern across records nobody has time to read.
It works poorly where the answer has to be defensible. Deciding whether conduct breached a policy, assessing a risk rating, or determining whether an incident is reportable are judgements someone has to own and explain.
A useful rule is to let it prepare work and never let it finish work.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner publishes guidance on personal information. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
