Stages of Performance Management Cycle
The stages of performance management cycle are commonly described as plan, act, review and reward, drawn as a circle.
The circle is misleading because the stages are not equal. Planning takes a week. Reviewing takes a fortnight. Rewarding takes a day. The acting stage takes the remaining eleven months, and it receives the least structure and the least attention of any of them.
That is where performance is actually managed or not managed. Whether a concern gets raised in the week it happens. Whether workload gets noticed. Whether anyone says well done.
Organisations that improve their process usually improve the review, which is the shortest stage. Putting a light structure into the long stage, such as a monthly check-in that genuinely happens, changes considerably more.
The Fair Work Commission considers whether concerns were raised at the time. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
