The role of artificial intelligence in cyber security on the attacking side has changed one thing in particular, and it undermines a decade of awareness training.

Phishing messages used to give themselves away through clumsy English. That signal has largely gone. A message can now be fluent, correctly formatted, in the recipient’s language, and tailored using information taken from public profiles.

Voice is following. Convincing impersonation of a familiar voice on a short call is no longer difficult, which matters for any process where hearing the right person is treated as verification.

The response is to move the check away from judgement. Verify through a channel already on file, not the one that made contact, and stop teaching people that bad grammar is the tell.
