What are HR policies in HRM? They are the stated positions an organisation takes on how people are managed, and they sit above two other layers that get confused with them.
Policy is the position. What the organisation expects and will not accept. Approved at a senior level and changed rarely.
Procedure is the method. The steps, owners and timeframes for carrying the policy out. Operational and changed often.
Practice is what actually happens. Not written down anywhere, and the layer that decides whether the first two mean anything.
The gap between policy and practice is where most people risk sits. A policy saying complaints are handled within five days, in an organisation where they take six weeks, is evidence against you rather than for you.
