Taking the minutes. Organising the farewell and collecting for the gift. Being the one who notices a colleague is struggling. Onboarding new starters informally. Sitting on the culture committee. Doing the emotional work of a difficult team.
All of it is valuable and none of it appears in a performance review or a promotion case. The person doing it has less time for the visible work that does get rewarded, so the cost compounds quietly.
It is worth auditing once. Who has done these tasks over the past year? The distribution is rarely even, and the fix is straightforward. Rotate them, or count them.
