What Are Work Incidents
What are work incidents where nobody was injured? They are near misses, and they are the most valuable safety data available to an organisation.
The reason is timing. An injury tells you a control failed and someone was harmed. A near miss tells you the same control failed, at no cost, with time to fix it. The circumstances are usually identical and only the outcome differs.
Most organisations collect very few, and the reason is rarely apathy. Reporting takes ten minutes on a form built for injuries, nothing visibly happens afterwards, and the worker who reports occasionally gets a conversation about why they were in that situation.
Fix those three and near miss reporting rises sharply. That rise is a good sign, not a deteriorating one.
