What Is An Employee Directory
What is an employee directory? At its simplest it is a searchable list of who works at an organisation, their role, their team and how to reach them at work.
The question worth asking is what it should not contain, because directories accumulate fields over time and rarely lose them.
Personal mobile numbers and home addresses are the common ones. They get added for convenience, usually during a period when people are working remotely, and then stay visible to the entire organisation long afterwards. Emergency contact details are another. They belong in a restricted record, not an open list.
A reasonable default is that a directory shows work contact details and reporting lines, and that anything personal requires the individual to opt in and be able to remove it later.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner publishes the Australian Privacy Principles. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
