An asset management system records what the organisation owns or leases, who holds it, where it is, what condition it is in and when it is next due for attention. That reaches well beyond laptops.
Vehicles, which carry driver and maintenance obligations. Plant and equipment with inspection or servicing requirements. Personal protective equipment with expiry dates. Keys and access cards. Tools issued to field staff.
The items with a servicing or inspection cycle are the ones that matter most, because a missed inspection is a safety issue rather than an accounting one, and the register is where you would demonstrate it was not missed.
