What Is Physical Harassment
What is physical harassment? It is unwelcome physical conduct directed at a worker, and the definition reaches considerably further down the scale than assault.
The serious end is well understood. Hitting, pushing, grabbing or restraining someone is criminal conduct as well as a workplace matter, and should be treated that way.
The lower end is where organisations hesitate. Standing too close deliberately. Blocking a doorway or a corridor. Throwing or slamming objects near someone. Unnecessary touching framed as friendly. Invading personal space repeatedly after being asked not to.
None of that leaves a mark, and each incident sounds minor described on its own. Sustained, it creates a genuine risk to health and safety, which is the test that matters under work health and safety law.
Safe Work Australia covers this as a hazard. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
