What Is Psychological Health And Safety
What is psychological health and safety? It is the duty to manage risks to psychological health arising from work. The most useful way to understand it is through the hazards it covers, because the list is more specific than most people expect.
- Job demands. Sustained high workload, time pressure, or emotionally demanding work.
- Low job control. Little say over how or when work is done.
- Poor support. Insufficient practical help, information or supervision.
- Low role clarity. Unclear or conflicting expectations.
- Poor change management. Change without consultation or explanation.
- Inadequate reward and recognition. Effort with no acknowledgement.
- Poor workplace relationships. Including bullying, harassment and conflict.
- Remote or isolated work. Distance from help if something goes wrong.
- Violence, aggression and traumatic content. Including exposure through clients or the public.
Run that list against your own workplace honestly and most organisations find two or three that are clearly present.
