Why Is Psychological Health And Safety Important
Why is psychological health and safety important? The answer is simple. It is a duty with a regulator behind it, and it is enforced through the same work health and safety machinery as physical safety.
That changes what a reasonable response looks like. An employee assistance programme and a wellbeing week are supports, not controls. The duty asks you to identify psychosocial hazards in how work is designed and managed, and to do something about them at that level. If unreasonable workload is the hazard, resilience training for the people carrying it is not a control for that hazard.
The second reason is evidentiary. Regulators and courts look for what a reasonable duty holder would have done. An organisation that has never assessed psychosocial risk has nothing to point to, regardless of how well intentioned it was.
Safe Work Australia sets out the model duty and code of practice, and requirements vary by state and territory. This is general information rather than legal advice, and a specific situation warrants proper advice.
