why is psychological safety so important
Why psychological safety matters now more than it did five years ago comes down to three changes, and only one of them is fashion.
The law moved. Amendments to the model Work Health and Safety Regulations in 2022 brought psychosocial risk into the same framework as physical risk. Poor support, low control and poor workplace relationships became hazards an employer is expected to manage, not features of a demanding job.
Work spread out. Hybrid and remote arrangements removed most of the informal ways concerns used to surface. The corridor conversation was doing more work than anyone credited, and nothing automatically replaced it.
Claims and expectations shifted. Psychological injury claims are treated more seriously than they once were, and candidates increasingly ask about culture in terms that are really about this.
The first of those is the one that changes obligations rather than preferences. Safe Work Australia publishes the model Code of Practice on managing psychosocial hazards at work, and adoption varies by state and territory. This is general information rather than legal advice.
