Why is respect in the workplace important, argued in money rather than values? Because of who leaves first.
When a team becomes unpleasant, people do not depart in order of unhappiness. They leave in order of how easily they can go. The capable, in-demand, recently-promoted people have options and use them. The people who stay longest are frequently those with the fewest alternatives.
That produces a slow inversion in capability that nobody decided and everybody notices eventually. It is also expensive twice over, since replacing an experienced person costs a multiple of their salary once recruitment, lost productivity and the ramp-up of a replacement are counted.
None of it appears as a line item called disrespect. It shows up as turnover in one team, and it is usually explained as a market issue.
