Why Is Safe Manual Handling Important

Why is safe manual handling important in a workplace with no manual handling incidents on record? Because most of these injuries never produce an incident at all.

The acute version is easy to see. Someone lifts badly, feels it immediately, and reports it. That is the minority.

The cumulative version has no moment. Tissue damage builds over months of repetition until the person cannot work. Asked when it happened, they cannot say. There is nothing to report at the time and no incident form is ever completed.

The practical consequence is that an empty incident log is not evidence of a safe workplace. Better indicators are what people report informally, absence patterns in physically demanding roles, and how many workers are on modified duties.
