Equal Employment Opportunity Courses
Equal employment opportunity courses meet the same objection in every room, usually from someone senior and well intentioned. We already hire on merit, so this does not apply to us.
Content that dismisses that loses the room. Content that answers it properly does more than the rest of the module.
The honest answer is that merit is the goal, and the question is whether your process actually measures it. Unstructured interviews measure confidence and similarity to the interviewer. Assessing culture fit measures familiarity. Screening on continuous service measures who has not taken carer’s leave. Each of those feels like merit from the inside.
Structured criteria set before applications open, more than one independent scorer, and evidence against each criterion are what turn merit from an intention into a measurement.
Framed that way, the training is about accuracy rather than fairness, and the objection usually resolves itself.
The Australian Human Rights Commission covers discrimination obligations. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
