Manual Handling Awareness Course
A manual handling awareness course is worth judging on how its time is divided, because the standard split gets it backwards.
Most courses spend the bulk of the running time on lifting demonstration. Bend the knees, keep the load close, avoid twisting. That is useful, it takes about four minutes, and almost nobody performs a real task the way the demonstration shows.
The content that changes outcomes is recognition. What makes a task hazardous, using the actual risk factors of force, posture, repetition and duration. How to spot those in your own work. What to report and to whom. What controls exist and how to ask for them.
A course that leaves people able to name why a task is a problem has done more than one that leaves them lifting slightly differently for a fortnight.
Safe Work Australia publishes the model code. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
