Modern Slavery Online Course
A modern slavery online course is short awareness training that helps Australian workers recognise severe exploitation and know how to escalate it. Most run 20 to 40 minutes and finish with an assessment and a dated completion record. The useful question is rarely whether to run one. It is whether the one you are already running is still accurate.
Currency is the first thing to check. The Commonwealth framework has moved since many of these courses were written. A 2024 amendment to the Modern Slavery Act 2018 created the Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner, the only amendment made to that Act. A module recorded before then can be perfectly sound on the fundamentals and out of date on the parts a reporting entity actually gets asked about.
Depth is the second. The Attorney-General’s Department splits its own modern slavery resources four ways, for frontline workers, community, business and government, because the same facts are not equally useful to each group. One generic module issued to the whole organisation is the common failing. A person approving supplier contracts needs different material from a person supervising a site.
The third is what the record proves. A completion shows that a named person finished a module on a date. It does not show they would recognise debt bondage in a labour hire crew. Treat completions as evidence of coverage and look elsewhere for evidence of effect, which is where learning assessment and the wider compliance training programme earn their place.
The department’s guidance, training and resources hub is a sensible place to sense-check course content against the current position, and it also points to online courses run by specialist organisations. Obligations differ by sector and change over time, so treat this as general information rather than legal advice.
