Why Is Workforce Management Important
Why is workforce management important beyond filling shifts? Because in Australia rostering is where pay compliance is decided, well before payroll processes anything.
Awards attach entitlements to when and how work is performed. Overtime thresholds, penalty rates, minimum engagement periods, breaks between shifts, and allowances for particular conditions. A roster built without regard to those rules produces underpayment automatically, and payroll simply pays what the roster says.
That matters more than it used to. Wage underpayment has moved from a recovery-and-penalty issue toward criminal exposure in serious cases, and the direction of travel is clear.
The practical control is to put award interpretation at the rostering step rather than the payroll step. Catching a non-compliant roster before it is worked costs nothing. Catching it in a back-pay calculation two years later costs a great deal.
The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes awards and pay rules. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
