Workplace Culture
Workplace culture is not the statement on the wall. It is the pattern of behaviour that gets rewarded and the behaviour that gets tolerated, and every employee reads both accurately within a few months.
The tolerated half does more damage. One high performer whose conduct is overlooked tells a team more about the real standard than any policy or training module. Every exception made publicly rewrites what the rules mean.
The rewarded half is equally legible. If the people promoted are consistently the ones who deliver regardless of how they treat others, the organisation has communicated its priorities clearly, whatever it says elsewhere.
That is why culture work that stops at values and posters changes nothing. What moves it is what happens in promotion decisions, in performance conversations and the first time a senior person is held to the same standard as everyone else.
Safe Work Australia treats sustained poor culture as a psychosocial hazard. This is general information rather than legal advice, and obligations vary by state and territory.
